A New Mexico minor child power of attorney enables one or more parents to authorize temporary guardianship over their minor child or children. An example of appropriate use would be if a single parent were to leave on a business trip or for military deployment for an extended period of time. While away, the parent will want a trusted individual, such as a relative, close friend, or responsible caretaker, to make sure the child receives the care, medical attention, and education they require. A minor child power of attorney form is valid only for six months after the date of execution; after half a year, the parent will have to complete a new power of attorney form consenting to guardianship of their child(ren).
