A New Mexico minor child power of attorney enables one or more parents to authorize the temporary guardianship over their minor child or children. An example of appropriate use would be if a single parent were to leave on a business trip or for military deployment for an extended period of time. While away, the parent will want a trusted individual, such as a relative, close friend, or responsible caretaker, to make sure the child receives the care, medical attention, and education they require. A minor child power of attorney form is valid only for six (6) months after the date of execution; after half a year, the parent will have to complete a new power of attorney form consenting guardianship of their child(ren).
