A West Virginia medical power of attorney form is part of an advance directive, which consists of both a medical power of attorney and a living will. With the medical power of attorney, the principal appoints an agent who will make all their healthcare decisions when they are incapacitated and cannot make decisions on their own. Most people choose a relative, spouse, or close friend as their agent. However, the agent cannot be an individual involved in providing the principal’s healthcare, unless they are related. With the living will, the principal establishes their requests for various life-extending or terminating treatments.
